Artwork Presentation
All ad artwork submitted to the Ben Ledi View must be provided as a 2400 dpi, high resolution PDF file.
Professional designers only may also submit artwork as an Adobe Illustrator EPS with all layers flattened and all type converted to outlines, or as a Photoshop EPS with all layers flattened and all type rasterized.
Please decide which of the following phrases describes you best and then click it for further instructions:
- I am a Luddite!
- I use a computer but am not a professional designer

Info for Luddites
You have two options:
1. Small, simple ads. Type out the wording of your ad and ask whoever designed/printed your company stationery to supply you with a copy of your logo in EPS or 600dpi TIFF format on a Mac CD-ROM (they'll know what the jargon means!). Give us your wording and the CD-ROM and we'll put your ad together for you.
2. If you require a complicated ad, or cannot supply the required items, you'll need to hire a graphic designer to do your artwork for you. It's not that expensive and you'll have exactly what you want/we need.
Info for non-designers
1. Please create your ad to exactly the right dimensions (see the table of measurements above) in black and white, also known as greyscale.
2. Double-check that the wording is typed correctly. If you're not sure, run it through a spelling/grammar checker and consult a dictionary. (No, we shouldn't be having to tell you this, but you'd be amazed by some of the howlers we've seen!)
3. If you're incorporating pictures into your artwork, please read the notes about image quality and copyright below.
4. Print your ad to a PDF file. PDFs are generally produced using Adobe Acrobat Distiller - part of the paid-for version of the Adobe Acrobat program, but if you don't have that here's what to do:
Mac OSX - you don't need any additional software. Just click the 'Save as PDF' button in the usual Print dialog box.
Windows - you will need additional software. Several PDF generators are available for download, either for free or very cheaply, from the web. One of these - NovaPDF, which enables you to print straight to a high-resolution, print-ready PDF as easily as you would print to your normal printer - can be found at http://www.novapdf.com/ (see the Legal Disclaimer below).
5. Before you submit your ad to us, please check it carefully using Adobe
Acrobat Reader.
6. Email your PDF to our (max. attachment size 4.5 Mb). Larger files can be sent via www.yousendit.com. Please include your company's name in the email's subject line, and include your contact details in your message. Please prefix your subject line with 'BLV', otherwise it'll be zapped by our junk filters.
7. If this sounds like complete gibberish to you, please hire a designer to do your ad for you!
Info for designers
1. Please design ads in greyscale to the appropriate dimensions (shown in the table above) and deliver either as:
- a 300 dpi Photoshop EPS, with all type rasterized and all layers flattened;
- an Illustrator EPS, flattened and with all type converted to outlines; or as
- a high-res PDF.
2. If you're designing a colour ad (we sometimes print certain sections in colour in the Christmas edition) please use CMYK and deliver either as a high-res PDF or as an Illustrator EPS with all layers flattened and type converted to outlines.
Email ads to our (max. attachment size: 4.5Mb). Larger files can be sent via www.yousendit.com. Please include your client's company name, prefixed by the word BLV, in the email's subject line, and include your contact details and theirs in your message.
For all advertisers: a note about image quality
The quality of printed images depends on the resolution of your original scan or digital image. Please only use high-resolution images in your ads, i.e. 300 pixels per inch or higher, and don't try to stretch them.
To be printed at A4 size, your image needs to be 2551 x 3579 pixels; at A5, 2551 x 1831 pixels; and at A6, 1311 x 1831 pixels. If your photo is to be cropped the source file will need to be even bigger.
Please don't be tempted to try to 'fix' images that are too small or lower than the required resolution. Artificially increasing the resolution of an image will make the problem worse, producing a pixellated, jaggly picture.
Always start with a high-resolution image. If it's not right, don't use it!
For all: image copyright
If you plan to use images in your ad artwork then you must either own copyright to the image or possess a licence to use it in advertising. Please do not pinch pictures off the web or scan them in from books or magazines - it's illegal and if we spot a problem then we won't print the ad unless the image is removed. Neither the Ben Ledi View nor Callander Community Newspaper Association will accept liability for copyright infringement offences by advertisers.
